Mac users pay for their music more than Windows users

by Michael Mistretta on Dec 26, 2007 at 12:12 PM

iPod ListeningMarket research firm NPD have found that Mac users are more likely to pay for music than PC users. Half of Mac users actually pay for music, while only 16% of PC users pay. This may have to do with Apple’s deep integration between the Mac, the iPod, and the iTunes Store. But surprisingly, this doesn’t even account for just digital downloads. Mac users also topped PC users with CD sales as well. 28% of PC users bought CDs to get their music, while 32% of Mac users bought CDs.

“There’s still a cultural divide between Apple consumers and the rest of the computing world, and that’s especially apparent when it comes to the way they interact with music,” NPD Group VP Russ Crupnick said in a statement. “Mac users are not only more active in digital music, they are also more likely to buy CDs, which helps debunk the myth that digital music consumers stop buying music in CD format.”

What does this mean? Is it just hard to pirate music on the Mac? No. I think that most Mac users respect the artists, and want to support them where they can. While many people may argue for or against piracy, Mac users are more likely to want to support the artist if they provide good content. Also, with Mac users being stereotyped as “creative”, it is likely that many like CDs because of the lossless quality.
