Mac Mini or AppleTV to be based on NVIDIA Ion

by Jake Gaecke on Jan 16, 2009 at 09:57 PM

NVIDIA Ion Platform moboThe guys over at TomsHardware are claiming to have sources who say Apple will be using NVIDIA’s Ion platform for either the next Mac Mini or AppleTV.

The sources say Apple was the first to receive samples of the platform while others still only have blueprints. The Ion platform makes use of the 9600M GPU, which is more than capable of decoding full HD video. This is apparently paired with an Intel Atom processor. That last bit there is what makes a lot of people think this is destined for the AppleTV. The Atom isn’t exactly the optimal processor for the Mac Mini.

Whichever device this ends up in, it will likely help to reduce the case size. The Ion platform is small even when compared to the current Mac Mini. The Mac Mini is small, but I doubt anyone will complain if it gets a little smaller.

The rumor also says we can expect to see the new Mac Mini hit the market around March. This conflicts with other reports of the Mac Mini’s imminent release. As always, stay tuned for further development.

I know people that will complain if the mini gets smaller. ME! If it gets smaller then that means they probably sacrificed some features and/or power. I know that the mini isn’t meant to be a powerful machine, but it should at least be as powerful as the macbooks, like it has been every time it has been upgraded.
