Mac Labs at the Macworld Expo

Macworld Expo
The Mac Labs at the Macworld Expo is kind of an in-depth training class for just about everything Apple computer related. Mac Labs is an interesting part of the Macworld Expo. Mac Labs offer intimate, hands-on instruction for specific applications and tools. I have to say if I was going to get the opportunity to go to the Macworld Expo, this is the module in which I would be most interested.

Day 1

It starts off day 1 with an Apple script class, and I think most people would like a little more automation in there life. Next there is an iMovie and Garageband 101 class geard towards educators, but I’m sure most of us would come away with some new tricks to try in front of our Macs at home too. The first day also covers DNS management, using the iPod Touch in the classroom, and iTunes for audiophiles. I would totally drool over that last one, I am all about getting my music to sound better.

Day 2

Day two offers a “hands on” with iWork. Now, I know I am an Apple fanboy, but I don’t like iWork. It simply is too different from Microsoft Office for me to be able to use it quickly and effectively. I know what you’re saying, “Use it and you will get used to it.” Well, I use Office at the office, so I just don’t see the point.

Anyway back on point here. Day two also offers a UNIX scripting of OS X module that just seems really cool to learn. Next, you have another using the iPod touch in the classroom module, which is also available on day one. After that would be a “hands on” with iLife. Now, I am always up for learning about any of the iLife suite applications, and I can only assume this module is going to go over some of the more in-depth and advanced tips and tricks. Let’s hope so anyway.

The next module is an Automator workflow creation module. I have not had a lot of experience with the Automator workflows, but I am sure this module could open my eyes to what it can do. The last module of day two is one that could be very good for our children: iChat and streaming video for students. This has endless possibilities for younger Mac users to study and interact with other students, not only in the U.S. but abroad as well. Definitely a don’t miss.

Day 3

Day three offers a rehash of the “hands on” with both iLife and iWork suites of software. Also on day three is the “make your color behave” module. At first, I did not have a clue as to what that meant. I then did my due diligence to find out. No love. I still have no idea, so, if you know, please share it with me as I am curious, and a little upset about not finding the answer. Best I can tell it has something to do with Final Cut Studio. There is also a Final Cut Studio workflow module. Having never used Final Cut Studio, I cannot make a direct comment, However, a workflow tutorial is never a bad thing, no matter what software you are using. Also there is a Podcasting for the classroom module that, along with the streaming video module, can mean so very much for our schools. Where were these cool things when I was in school? I guess we had some cool stuff back then, too. The wheel was pretty cool.

Moving on, they have a module for running your wireless network safely and reliably. I don’t know anyone who does not have a wireless network anymore, so I am sure this module would be beneficial. The rest of the modules are related to Google tools in education.

Day 4

Day four gets a little more in depth with some of the tools that have already been discussed. Another iWork module going into images, impact, and interaction starts the day. Then there is an Active Directory integration module, though I suppose this is geared towards the IT guru, and might better fit the MacIT seminar. A Google Earth module follows that one and can be useful to most people, not just students.

Then, the modules get in-depth with some of our favorite products. There is a Final Cut Studio overview, and a “building a better workflow” with Photoshop module to round out the day. I am glad they were able to fit Photoshop in there, as it is complex, and can be daunting to a first time user. The day is rounded out with a networking module that covers some of the advanced modern networking processes. A must-know for geeks like myself.

Day 5

Day five is short and offers only “MacForensics” and OS X Server in education. So, that’s still a lot to learn.

If I was able to make it this year, I would really have a hard time deciding when and where to be to make as beneficial as possible.

Questions? Comments? Post away, my fellow Apple friends.
