A study by NPD on sales figures of PCs in brick and mortar stores shows that Mac units despite going beyond the $1000 price markup, is still gaining leads over the declining sales of Windows PC. In fact, Windows PC notebooks showed zero percent growth as compared to Apple notebooks which have gained a 50 to 60 percent growth for the first quarter of 2008. For the desktop PC sales category, Apple’s Mac units showed a 45% growth, despite the 25% decline in the overall market performance, which was reflected in the sales of Windows desktop PCs for the same period.
Overall combined sales performance of Apple in both desktops and notebooks categories is at high mark of 66%, which is 2/3 of the first quarter sales figures in all market sales for PCs in the $1000 category. Phenomenal? Definitely. Reason? There are varied reasons actually. But the most logical and reasonable was given by NPD’s Steven Baker as quoted by Apple Watch:
“Apple has got better distribution than it’s had in the last 15 years, they’re in the right spot right now. There’s the iPod advantage. But the big thing is the stores.“
But of course, we should also add the fact that Apple’s manufacturing of its PC products also plays an important role in coming up with a product that certainly appeal to consumers, despite their steep prices. Apple’s end-to-end approach is what making the company thrive on the PC market. And that is what other should try to emulate if they want to grab a piece of the Apple’s pie.
