Live-blog: Apple event coverage

by Alec Feld on Aug 7, 2007 at 02:31 PM

With the Apple event taking place at 10am pacific time, Appletell will be bringing you live updates as soon as they come in. Who knows what we’re in for, new iMacs? iLife/iWork? .Mac updates? The only thing we’re sure of is that there will be no iPod or iPhone news at this time, Apple was fairly clear about that.

10:00 - We’re getting started.

10:01 - Steve’s on stage. “Good morning, thanks for coming over this morning”

10:02 - Talking about the iMac, all in one design

10:07 - New iMac is thinner, uses glass and aluminum

10:09 - Dedicated media keys, function keys, wireless, bluetooth 2.0

10:17 - Up to 1 TB of HD space

10:20 - iLife 08, with new app

10:22 - iPhoto has new feature, “events”. “Digital cameras have made it so easy and inexpensive, photo libraries have grown, not unusual to find photo library with 5 or 6 thousand photos. It’s getting hard to find ‘em. We make albums, go to some event, take photos, and look what’s happened. We have tons of albums. They’re centered around events. Birthday party, family reunion. We label the albums. We have a computer, we could do this automatically. Automatically makes events out of your photos. Around 50 photos per avg per event. What that means is, instead of looking through 5K, you’re just looking through 100 events. Makes photos manageable again. What photos go in an event? When it automatically makes an event, what does it do? All photos taken in a day. All photos yesterday, put in an event. photos taken two days ago in an event, and so on. What happens if I go to a b-day party in the morning and wedding in the afternoon? Just pick first photo and splits automatically into two events. Multi-day events can be joined together into single event.” - Engadget

10:30 - Copy photo adjustments to multiple photos, new calendars, books, and more.

10:33 - New .Mac Web Gallery, Web 2.0 gallery that syncs with your iPhoto library. Accessible from any browser, download print quality photos.

10:36 - “Send to web gallery” option available on the iPhone, sends photos right to .Mac Web Gallery, can view other peoples web galleries, fully integrated.

10:42 - iMovie is a completely new app.

10:48 - Can export at higher res than a DVD, can upload and encode straight to YouTube, iPhone. Looks like iPhoto library, except with clips instead of photos.

11:00 - iDVD: adding pro encoding, new themes.

11:04 - Magic GarageBand, play to certain genres, change instruments on the fly.

11:05 - iLife 08 available today, $79

11:05 - .Mac - increased storage. 10GB. $99.95 for one year subscription.

11:11 - New versions of Keynote and Pages. Keynote: new text effects, transitions. New feature: Instant Alpha. Keep the part of the photo you want, have Keynote take out the background. Create your own animations, smart builds, new themes. Pages: Two modes - layout and word processor. 140 templates.

11:17 - Numbers, new spreadsheet app “We’ve got Keynote and Pages, but when you think of productivity, think of third app: Numbers, a spreadsheet for the rest of us. Done in the style of Keynote and Pages. We’ve got intelligent tables. Readable formulas. Checkboxes and sliders. Sort and filter, pick column and just sort. Simple stuff. Flexible canvas. Want to change formatting of one part without screwing up the other part. Numbers lets you have multiple formats on single page. Move things around. Charts, images, and text labels. Can make gorgeous looking spreadsheets very quickly. Interactive printing, if I want to print, can scale easily to fit everything on one sheet, or move things around to put on different pages. Customizable templates, use what we supply or create your own. And of course, import and export all Excel documents.” - Engadget

11:20 - iWork 08 available today, $79

11:24 - Q&A, Mac mini being refreshed today.

11:33 - Keynote over, that’s it!

Does this thing really work?

Well, it looks like it wraps it just like I wanted.  Now I think we’re good and I need to run it by the others before rolling out.

This is a test of a long live-blog entry to see what it does when you get to the end of a column in the post.  This will help me style the post to best fit the long entries.

  • I’m glad I told my dad to wait before getting an iMac!

good god, can’t you reverse the order of your live blog so I don’t have to scroll down to see the latest?

  • Stephen Wales from UK said:

Again UK users are being screwed by Apple, US price 24”- $1799. UK Price - $2480! Bear in mind these machines are made in Cork Ireland less than 200 miles away, its not as if shipping has any effect on pricing! My last Mac will be my last if this keeps up.
