Jay-Z and Apple Starting a Record Label? The Rumors Start Again…

by Adam Fisher-Cox on Jan 7, 2008 at 10:30 AM

Jay-Z

Both Gizmodo and Boy Genius Report confirm from anonymous sources that Jay-Z and Apple will be announcing their fabled record label at MacWorld this year.

With more and more record companies ditching Apple and viewing them as competitors, Infinite Loop, the Ars Technica Apple Blog, figures it’s a good time for Apple to make a record label of it’s own. Infinite Loop also notes, however, that record companies might begin pulling their songs from iTunes as fast as possible as more and more of their artists are stolen by Apple’s new label.

This would be a great improvement if there are no snags the the aforementioned studios pulling out. Apple could afford to pay artists more for their work, as there would be no middleman, Infinite Loop points out. Tracks would most likely be 100% DRM free on iTunes Plus, and perhaps iTunes regular…

We’ll see what pans out at MacWorld…
