[Update: iPhone OS 3.1 is now available via iTunes.]
Steve Jobs has just announced the latest software upgrade available today for the iPhone and iPod touch - iPhone OS 3.1.
The new software update doesn’t include many new features, but has integrated the Genius function of the iTunes Store into the App Store on the device. Now, you can also use the Genius function to find similar apps and content based on what you already own.Not a ground-breaking update, but another useful and convenient feature to have available.
iPhone 3.1 also sees ringtones added to the device’s iTunes Store, giving access to over 30,000 ringtone’s priced at $1.29 each. The price seems a little high for a 30 second clip of a song, especially since you could buy the whole song for $.99 and make the ringtone yourself in GarageBand. Still, the option is there if you’d prefer a more professional attempt at selecting the best 30 seconds for a ringtone.
The update is free for both iPhone and iPod touch owners. Yes, that’s free for iPod touch owners. It’s not usual for the iPod touch to receive the software updates for free, but hey, I’m not complainin’.
That’s pretty much all that was announced on stage for iPhone OS 3.1. I’m sure there will be other small updates that we’ll see once we have a chance for hands-on with the software update in a few hours time. In the meantime, don’t forget to follow the live blog for up-to-the-minute updates on the rest of the keynote.
