Full FeediPhone nano and touch rumored, plausible
iPhone plans are quite pricy…in the U.S., that is. AT&T is making the users pay a premium to use the iPhone, that’s for sure. However, analysts see a huge revenue increase by Apple selling a data plan-less phone.
How exactly would Apple pull this off? Analysts predict two new products: an iPhone nano and an iPhone touch. The iPhone nano would simply be a smaller version of the current iPhone, with a shrunken display. The iPhone touch, however, would be a product different to what’s out there now. The iPhone touch would be similar to an iPod touch, except for the fact that it would be able to make phone calls and use WiFi instead of 3G for data. Feature differentiation on the next iPhone would provide a market for this product, with rumored features such as background apps and video chatting. Although Apple is known for not providing much choice in its products, choice in the phone market is key, and Apple may need to adapt it’s product line to fit today’s market.

This is pre-Steve Jobs thinking when it comes to a product line. They don’t need to create two new product when simply allowing users to turn of their wireless data access and rely on wifi would be smarter and cheaper.

If you are comparing US to other countries, maybe - most countries do not charge for incoming cell connections either, only outgoing, so we are getting screwed by the carriers, not the phone mfg.
For AT&T; $30 for iPhone 3G ($20 for 2G) data plan vs. $40 for Blackberry 2G or 3G
Same subsidized price for a Verizon BB Storm as an iPhone 3G, with tradeoffs both ways for features.
OR you could get a comparative Nokia - for $800.
Sounds more like competitive parity than price gouging - must be the new math.
on February 5, 2009 at 09:49 AM - LINKSign me up! i want me one. the only thing that holding me back from getting a iphone is the 2 yr verizon contract and the $40.00 data plan you would have to pay w/ iphone being that AT&T sucks around here i dont mind i just want a phone that will sync to my macbook

I had to can at&T because I got tired of going out into the corner of my yard to make or get a call. no good where I am. sticking with t-mobile because of the bars. I dont need always on internet or connection, MAYBE it would come in handy if I was on the highway and my server went down and I had to reboot it, but that’s much easier to do with a laptop. ust gimme a cheap fun phone that I can jam out to tunes with. noo need for GPS and 3g. kisses apple!
