UPDATED: iPhone home screen Exposé mock up seems interesting
The iPhone has a very functional interface consisting of 16 icons on each page, plus the four in the dock of the device. While this is enough to be able to organize pages efficiently, it can still be kind of annoying when you want an app on the last page and your’e on the first, seeing as how you have to flick through all of them. While Apple could make it so you can just go backwards through the pages (i.e. from 1 to 4, etc), I think the idea shown in the video below would be an interesting way to add this functionality. What it shows is a way to display all the pages on your device much like expose on the Mac. After clicking the home button, the screen zooms out and shows the grids.
I’m sure this could easily be added as a third option of what to do when the user clicks the home button twice. Right now, we have the choice of either opening up the iPod application or showing the controls, or of opening up the phone application. Making this a third choice would mean it stays out of the way for users who don’t find a need for it (such as only having one or two page of apps) but would also be available for those who like the idea. What do you think?
UPDATE: The type of feature talked about in this post has, in fact, been implemented by an iPhone developer. Unfortunately, it is only available through jailbroken iPhones on the Cydia App Store, as there is no way Apple would allow this in the actual App Store. However, if you do have a jailbroken phone or touch, be sure to check it out. You can purchase it through Cydia for $1.99 and find more information about it on Steven Troughton-Smith’s website.

Very nice idea. Apple has been curiously slow to improve the ability to navigate apps (which is doubtless one factor in how many are infrequently used after download). Even a simple way to categorize your own apps would be extremely helpful. For example - the ability to put apps in pre-set or customized categories (Travel / Research / Work / Games), with clear section dividers (and possibly color-shaded pages) would be extremely helpful at this point.

on October 18, 2009 at 01:23 AM - LINKI’ve tried this out on my iPhone 3G, and wasn’t really pleased with it. The amount of memory it constantly takes up is not worth its functionality in my opinion.
Still, there’s no harm in trying it for yourself. It’s called Orbit and you can find it in the Cydia Store section for anyone who’s interested.
