iPhone firmware 3.0 to support quad-core?

by Jake Gaecke on Jan 9, 2009 at 12:51 PM

iPhone 3.0 rumorNumerous websites are reporting independently on iPhone firmware 3.0. The rumor claims that it will support a quad core processor, and there’s evidence to help support that claim.

Imagination Technologies has announced a multi-core GPU that is appropriate for the next iPhone hardware update. And wouldn’t you know it, Apple not only invests in Imagination Technologies, they make the current GPU inside of of the iPhone and iPod Touch.

MacRumors also states that the CPU most likely to make its way to the next iPhone is a multi-core an ARM processor that is much more power efficient than Intel’s Atom processor.

So it all stacks up, but does it stay standing? It makes sense with the direction that Apple is taking the iPhone. They’re positioning the iPhone and iPod Touch as gaming machines, so they need as much processing power, in both CPU and GPU, as they can get. Plus, it never hurts, with the possible exception of battery life, to increase processing power.

One thing I’d love to see added to the next iPhone is (Copy and Paste (Push Notifications (stereo bluetooth support))) 802.11n. It’s a pain to run two networks in your house for the devices that would otherwise slow down your N network. The iPhone is currently one of those devices. Let’s change that.
