iPhone Firmware 2.0.1 is Live!

Apple has just unleashed the latest iPhone and iPod Touch firmware update to the interwebs. The update is said to address numerous “Bug fixes.” It’s 249MB, and that’s about as much detail as can be found right now. There are no specifics as to what bugs are being fixed, but with all the crashes iPhone users have been having with the 2.0 firmware and apps, this will be a welcomed update.
If you want to get some update action, sync your iPhone (or iPod Touch) to iTunes, hit the “Check for Update” button, then click “Download and Install.” Then, you have to agree to the terms and sit back and watch the bugs drop dead inside of your iPhone. Well, bugs don’t really die, they get fixed (hopefully). Anyway, I’m hoping this will bring an end to the unexplainable and all too frequent crashes of the 2.0 firmware.
Gizmodo says this should speed up the iPhone overall (typing, backing up, home page switching). An added bonus, it doesn’t completely wipe the device, meaning you won’t have to sit around and wait for all of your music, videos and pictures to resync back onto the device. Leave a comment if you find any other improvements; I’m dying to find out everything this fixes.

I would simply love to install this, but honestly, what is with Apple forcing the “Backing Up iPhone” process before it installs? If it gave me the option to skip it I would, since I don’t have anything important on my iPhone that I don’t have backed up elsewhere.
I started the patch update process (after the patch finished downloading) about an hour ago and it is STILL backing up the iphone. What makes things worse is that my iPhone is in locked mode, rather than Sync mode, so if a call comes in I am not sure if I should mess around with the phone itself and risk having to start the whole update process over again.
on August 5, 2008 at 01:42 PM - LINKyay, patch finally took. Tested out SMS and other keyboard usage and it is way faster than before, and there is no lag at all loading the contacts list (either in the app itself or in the phone app).
haven’t tested out the iPhone Backup yet because I am not at my main sync computer. will report back tonight after I close up my shop
