iPhone Developer Intervention Week 3: Using your resources wisely

by Josh Holat on Apr 12, 2009 at 09:42 AM

XCode IconI hope you all enjoyed the article about Twitter and Facebook APIs in relation to the iPhone SDK last week. This week I will be discussing some resources where you can find information if you want to get started or need help with developing for the iPhone. There are many places that can be found for this type of thing, and Apple provides developers with a plentiful amount of resources such as guides and what not. However, some are better than others.

One of the best places to find a resource is from the sample applications that Apple has built and made available to ADC members. These samples cover almost all of the things you would want, from audio frameworks to a simple navigation controller. All of the code can be perused, and it can become more clear how to do certain tasks. There is no better way to learn how to do something than by looking at example code.

Still, you may have questions about the code or how to do something after you look at it. That is where forums come in. A particularly helpful one I’ve have found is called the iPhone Dev SDK forum. It is not created by Apple, and anyone who has an account can post stuff and help others. There are plenty of users and a great backlog of topics to look through. It has become invaluable for me.

If forms aren’t your thing, maybe books are. There are plenty of books out there that offer tips, example code, and basic information about developing for the iPhone and Objective-C in general. These can be a great place to start if you want to see if programming is for you. However, they can also be a great resource when you have a question about a particular framewok or something, you just have to check the index.

And last but not least are your friends. If you don’t already have friends who are developers, try to find them through social networks and other places. They can become extremely helpful and are even fun to start new projects with. Who knows, they may even have a book they will let you borrow or even more places where you can go to find help. Nonetheless, there are plenty of places to look if you put the time into it.

If you have your own places that you go, feel free to help others out in the comments!
