iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz and 256 MB of RAM of fun

by Jake Gaecke on Jun 11, 2009 at 11:13 AM

iPhone 3G SThat’s right, the newly announced iPhone 3G S is approximately 182MHz faster than its older iPhone brothers. We know this thanks to T-Mobile of the Netherlands, which is not that surprising. I can’t remember the last time anyone thanked AT&T for anything, especially not the $200+ iPhone 3G loyal-repeat-early-adopter penalty.

T-Mobile in the Netherlands has some extra details about the iPhone 3G S on their info page for the device. Details like the fact that it has a 600MHz processor and 256MB of RAM. All previous iPhones were governed at 412MHz to save battery, even though they, too, could reach 600MHz. But apparently the new iPhone 3G S manages to run at this speed and not kill battery life. Also, for comparison, the second generation iPod Touch ran at 532MHz. Oh, and the RAM, double all previous iDevices. Yay!

Apple said the device is noticeably faster than all previous iPhones, and it’s obvously not just software optimization. It’s good to see that the iPhone 3G S is at least a little more than just a slightly better camera. Yet it still doesn’t have 802.11n. I suppose you have to save something for next year. Faster loading times and snappier response while web surfing are obvious, but does this imply better looking games as well? I wouldn’t doubt it.
