iPhone 3G has a bad 3G chipset?

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 12, 2008 at 05:30 PM

iPhone 3G ChipSetGigaOm is reporting on some recent issues with the iPhone 3G. Om, and others, have been complaining about what they call poor 3G reception with the new iPhone. Om quotes Richard Windsor, an analyst with Nomura Securities, who has a possible explanation.

We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain Infineon is the 3G supplier.

AT&T can continue their statements that the problem is not on their end; it seems it’s the chipset that could be slowing down the iPhone 3G. It appears that even the iPhone’s cracking plastic on the back of the 3G that was supposed to boost reception can’t help these possibly faulty chipsets.

The article continues by pointing out that if the chipsets are in fact faulty, it would be purely a hardware issue. This means that the alleged poor 3G reception could not be fixed with a firmware update.

First, it cracks. Now, it’s bad reception. I can’t help but think that I’m more happy than ever with my original iPhone. Looks like I’ll be keeping my original iPhone for a bit longer. Maybe I’ll wait for that iPhone Nano.

Do you have an iPhone 3G? How’s the 3G reception working out for you?

White 3G here. No cracks, great 3G reception (except at home and work, but no one else does either). To me, this was a giant leap from a Treo that would drop just about every other call (on Verizon).

I’m overally very happy with my iPhone (second actually, first had a malfunctioning mic which i tested on my walk back from the apple store…luckily it was exchanged for a new one that day).

I got a black 8gb iPhone the day it came out and have no issues at all. No cracks and reception has been very good. I’m with AT&T;in Florida and I’m a very satisfied customer. Don’t no why others are having problems but I suppose it could be a bad iPhone or batch that some customers bought.

16GB black 3G drops calls at home sometimes.  Could be the chipset, could be the weaker 3G signal at home, or it could be that I don’t talk long enough when I’m out and about.  I guess time will tell.

    No cracks (yet).

Finally, these reports are coming out! My iPhone will go to Edge when I’m in downtown Houston. How frustrating, especially when I’m cruising down the road using the GPS. However, I don’t imagine this has anything to do with the fact that my phone will exit out of applications or restart at least once almost every day. I’m not the only one - read the reviews for 3rd party apps. So many developers get about their application “breaking people’s iPhones” and “freezing up on them.” It’s not the application - it’s the operating system. AT&T;is TERRIBLE compared to Verizon (unless it’s just the phone that’s giving me problems). I RARELY had a dropped call or no service with Verizon. Now I drop a call in the parking garage every day. The iPhone is great, but it sure has its trade-offs.

  • At home, my white 3G gets lousy reception whilst my wife’s HTC Touch gets strong 3G.
    Sad
