You’re probably well aware of the new iPhone 3.0 software that will be available in a few months. This update brings tons of promising features that will help to make the iPhone that much better than the competition. However, a few of the major updates for this new software offer promising features that game developers can use to make their games even better. Some of these features were expected to be announced by Apple, but other ones come as a great surprise in my opinion, and I can’t wait for them to be available.
The first of these features I alluded to is the peer to peer connectivity in the new software. This update will allow applications on separate iPhones to communicate with each other in all sorts of new ways. For example, through Bluetooth, iPhone developers will now be able to create multi-player games that are fully functional and supported by Apple. This opens so much new ground for Apple and iPhone developers as the iPhone can now be considered a multi-player game platform, unlike before.
A second feature that will greatly improve gaming are the accessory APIs Apple is offering. This will allow developers to interact with different items that are plugged into the iPhone either via the connector or Bluetooth. If the device has the “Made for iPhone” sticker on it, then you know it will be able to talk to the iPhone in this new way. With this developers could possibly create joysticks or other innovative pieces of hardware to use with their games.
However, it doesn’t stop there. There is also the new in app purchase feature that will allow developers to add level packs to their applications, as well as other ideas, such as new characters. With this, game developers can find a way to make even more money and improve their app greatly.
It looks as if this new software offers plenty of great features of which developers can take full advantage, if they wish. With this update, I believe Apple really has stepped ahead of all the rest.
