Intel quietly announces Core 2 Duo S

by Jake Gaecke on Aug 22, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Intel Announces Core 2 Duo SIntel made a quiet announcement recently that may affect the future of the MacBook Air line of laptops. Remember that processor that Intel made just for Apple? It seems they have improved upon that; Intel has announced the Core 2 Duo “S.“

Although running on the same 1,066MHz system bus and with the same 6MB of Level 2 cache as newer Core 2 Duos, the “S” and its accompanying chipset are 60 percent smaller overall while the processor itself uses 17 watts at its thermal design peak versus 20 watts for its Apple-focused ancestor. Both also keep the same hardware virtualization and trusted execution as for their larger counterparts.

The speeds are the same, 1.6 and 1.86GHz. Intel hasn’t talked about a shipping date, but most estimates point towards September (read special Apple event).

I think it’s likely that this will be the next processor in the MacBook Air, but I was hoping for that 2GHz speed boost that was rumored. Maybe Apple won’t use the default clock speed if this really does end up in a future MacBook Air.
