How to get your Mac to talk to your PS3
![]()
I do not own a PS3, but I am betting some of you do or will after Christmas. If you have not dropped the cash on an Apple TV yet and are looking for a way to stream media from your Mac to your TV, you can do so via the PS3 with MediaLink from Nullriver.
From the Nullriver site:
With MediaLink’s flawless iTunes integration, getting to your songs on your PlayStation 3 is just as easy as it is on your Mac. Find any song, album or artist with ease in the Mac-like navigation system provided by MediaLink. MediaLink also conveniently shares your Playlists, Podcasts and Videos to your PlayStation 3. With MediaLink, you can view your iPhoto photo library and slideshows on your television screen, they’re especially beautiful in vivid high definition. Make your PlayStation 3 your home media center. MediaLink can stream high definition video content to your living room with ease!
Don’t use iTunes or iPhoto? Do you have media stored outside your libraries? No problem! MediaLink has full folder organization support. MediaLink can easily locate music, photos and videos in any folder on your Mac and even preview it and collect ID3 information from your songs.
This seems like an excellent solution for those of you with a Mac and a PS3.

I own both a PS3 and MediaLink. Nullriver has really don’t a good job of providing updates (that strangely almost never automatically update even though it’s supposed to) for this program. It works pretty well, especially for transferring over files, like MP3s and such. Movies will take a long time, and for various reasons (not the least of which is the lack of 802.11n support for the PS3) HD video will be basically unwatchable while being streamed from MediaLink. I’ve tried, but it stops playing while it streams more data ever second or so. But for anything less than HD, it works very well. I’m big on HD, but I’d still recommend MediaLink. It is a very decent program for the money.
on November 21, 2008 at 02:26 PM - LINKHi there,
I also tried Medialink first as a trial, and when I bought a license nothing worked, and updates were few and far between. I really haven’t seen anything as good out there as Tversity, (http://tversity.com/), even though this is a windows only app, it’s well worth booting into XP just to run this. You can stream all your media to the PS3 via wifi, and the best is that it’s free with a decent UI!
Of course you can upgrade to the Pro ($29.95) if you want to stream premium Internet content on your TV (including full episodes), from sites like Hulu (US only) and BBC iPlayer (UK only), but as I’m not a resident of either country this is nothing for me, until Hulu goes international.
Hope that helps some of you reading this!
