How to add custom wallpaper to your iPhone 3G with iOS 4
Adding custom wallpaper to your iPhone with its new OS is a great way to provide an extra dimension of customization. It can also be a great big pain in the butt if you do not want to choose from the basic ones that come with the phone. Yet, it can be done with iOS 4, a little bit of time, the right set of instructions, and…a jailbroken iPhone. So, let’s get down to business and get you the custom wallpaper of your dreams*.
- Save your images as a .png with at least a resolution of 480 by 320 pixels. You can save the files in Preview if you need to convert the format. It would be best if your image was similar in dimensions to the screen of your phone. The.png format is essential because it is the only format that will work for this application. A good resolution is 160 dpi; go any lower and you may have poor image quality.
- Name your files 127.png and higher in sequential order and save them to your iPhone. Then, make copies with the titles 127.thumbnail.png, replacing the numbers as you need to for each image in sequential order.
- Copy the files into the directory: /Library/Wallpaper/iPhone/
- Now turn off your phone, restart and sync it to your computer as you usually would.
* Please note that this method does require your target iPhone to has been jailbroken. Since this process is a violation of your Apple EULA, we cannot give you instructions on how to do there here (even though you now have permission from the Library of Congress). But you can find video on how to do it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj7nXPXCgPM

Without jailbreaking anything: Any 320 x 480 .jpg should do. Put it in iPhoto, perhaps in a separate album destined for syncing to the iPhone. Sync the iPhone. Then you can use the normal Settings on the iPhone to set the images as either a Lock Screen wallpaper or a Home Screen wallpaper. You are not limited to the Wallpaper category they offer. Synced iPhoto albums are perfectly good choices.
