For you not brushed up on you Latin, carpe diem is a popular literary expression meaning, “Seize the day.” What do I mean by this? If Apple wants to take control of the computer world that Microsoft has dominated for so long, now is the perfect time. All the planets are aligned, so to speak, and Apple just needs to take advantage of the situation. If they do it right, the tables could start to turn on Microsoft, leaving them wondering what happened. Here are three reasons the time is perfect for Apple to take control.
1) Vista. I think it’s safe to say that the majority of the population is fairly disappointed with Vista. After years of development and delays, it didn’t deliver. For that reason, the time is right for Apple to really push the idea of switching to Mac OS X and learning how to use an easier, more responsive operating system. The company needs to take advantage of the fact that Microsoft has been playing catch up with itself after Vista and really start hitting some nails into the coffin. For example, one area that Apple is really doing a great job of pushing users to switch is in their Get a Mac ads. Another strong point in this argument is the fact that Macs can run Vista and, in some cases, even better than a PC can.
2) Sales are rising across the board.MacBook sales are rising, all the hype around the iPhone is producing a nice halo effect for other Apple products, and the iPod is dominating the market place. This doesn’t mean it’s time to take a rest. Keep releasing new, innovative products and driving sales. Show your customers that you want to keep them up to date with the latest and greatest and only ship products you are proud of. Give them a reason to switch from Microsoft.
3) Steve Jobs can’t stick around forever. Mr. Jobs is clearly one of the best marketers this world has seen. Throughout his years at Apple he has been able to pull off deals no one thought possible, even after being fired from the company at one point. Dubbed iGod, this man is a sole reason Apple has become such a large and successful company. However, the day will come when retires. The company needs to really push out deals the last few years he is around and make some great progress. Although hard to say, the next Apple CEO probably won’t have quite the reputation Steve Jobs does.
