Time for another freaky (and free!) horror film for your holiday enjoyment. This time it’s the cult classic Carnival of Souls. Filmed by a director of educational shorts, the film makes excellent use of low-budget special effects and camera work to create jarring, haunting images that will give you both the heebies and the jeebies.

The plot of the movie is simple: a car accident forces three women to drive their car into the river, and only one survives. Starting a new life in Utah, she finds herself confronted by the image of a grotesque figure who begins to replace her reflection. As the woman becomes increasingly distant from the people around her, she is drawn to a deserted pavilion, and then…

Carnival of Souls is in the Public Domain, meaning you can download it free from the Internet Archive. The film is available in several sizes, including one specially formatted for iPods. And since no one owns it, you can remix it, distribute it, or do what you will.
