Graphics issues on the new MacBooks?

by Anthony Parkinson on Nov 28, 2008 at 06:40 AM

macbook-aluminum-mockupThere are quite a few reports on the new MacBooks have some serious graphic issues. Apparently some users are experiencing a mysterious “black screen” just a few minutes into graphics intensive game play. Apparently this is affecting both the new MacBook and the new MacBook Pro. Keep in mind that I am not Jonathan Ives, but there could be several things or a combination thereof causing these issues.

The new graphics chips in the machines could either have a bad driver, or have some kind of cooling problem. Either way, I expect to see an update for these models post haste. Popular game titles such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Ages of Empire III, Command and Conquer, Oblivion, Company of Heroes, and others have been reported as having issues.

The report also suggests the only absolute fix was to have their MacBook or MacBook Pro’s logic board replaced or have their system swapped out for one manufactured more recently. In these cases, the problems disappear completely, leading some to believe there is a hardware-related issue with an early batch of the notebooks.

Have any of you experienced this?

    Question:

Is this when running XP on the Mac or during ANY heavy game usage?

I bought mine day one and have not had this issue w/any of the graphics heavy things I do—mostly Photoshop and video work, tho. No games.

Per the report this was only experienced during game play. I am not able to find any reports involving windows.

  • This happens when doing 3D heavy gaming on either OS. And it only happens on the MacBook PRO with the 9600 GT in use.

Wes, Photoshop and video editing probably won’t put enough load on the graphics card to trigger the problem, if you have it.

One easy way to test it is to download a game demo, like “FlatOut 2” from the apple website:

    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/demos_updates/flatout2.html

Enable the discrete graphics card in the energy settings and play the game for a while. It can take up to an hour for it to happen, but I’ve always had it within 10 minutes of playing FlatOut 2.
