Google to release new browser

by Michael Goonan on Sep 1, 2008 at 06:53 PM

Google ChromeThere’s a new player the the browser wars, and it’s Google.

Google announced on the company blog today that they will be launching the beta of “Google Chrome” tomorrow morning for Windows, with versions for the Mac and Linux set to roll out in the coming weeks.

This certainly won’t ease tensions in Google’s “Cold War” with Microsoft, as now the folks in Redmond will have another innovate product to “compete” with.

You have to wonder what this means for Google’s relationships with Apple and Mozilla, as well. Google has been the one-and-only default search engine in Safari since its launch, and has also been pushing the “spread Firefox” as hard as anybody for a few years now. Clearly, Google must think they have something special to offer above and beyond what Apple and Mozilla have.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I bet we all could’ve predicted this was coming!  Makes me kind of nervous to have Google watch my Googling, my email, and my surfing habits.  I suppose if they’re out to “index the world’s information”, the best way is to just control all of it..
