“Time to upgrade…to a Mac” is the theme of the latest Get a Mac ads. Targeting Windows users who hope that the new operating system will solve the problems of the widely-derided Vista, the new commercials suggest that owning a Macintosh might be the real solution to their problems.
As always, John Hodgman plays the long-suffering PC, trying to convince frustrated users that Windows 7 will be different, much to Justin “Mac” Long’s subdued skepticism. Apple also repeatedly mentions that they’re number one in customer satisfaction.
In the first commercial, “Broken Promises,” we travel back in time to find out just how many times Microsoft has assured us that the “new” OS is the game changer:
In “Teeter Tottering,” a Windows user decides to switch to Mac:
“PC News” brings us a news report where people are excited about the latest operating system, which is apparently Snow Leopard:
Hodgman (himself a Mac user) carries this series of commercials rather well as the frustrated PC, allowing Long, as the straight man, to play off his buffoonery with little more that polite silence. Apple has, of course, seen an increase in its user base, something which Apple itself feels is fueled by a dislike of Vista. It’ll be interesting to see if Windows 7 can stop and/or reverse that movement.
