Free apps round-up for October 31, 2008

Free Apps Roundup for October 31, 2008I’m sorry, but I just couldn’t bring myself to list any gimmicky Halloween apps today. There’s just not enough room on my home screen for silly apps that are only entertaining for one week out of the whole year. But this week has been a great week for the App Store. We saw the Sonos app for controlling their wireless audio system go live, and who could forget Google Earth?

  • Daily Mugshot - We’ve all seen the galleries from people who have enough discipline to take a picture every day for, like, ever. If you are motivated as such, this app can help. It will even animate the pictures together for you. Give it a try and post one of those awesome galleries!
  • Cooliris - The plug-in that you may have come to love in Firefox is not available in a standalone app for the iPhone. You can view your images as a beautiful 3D wall. It’s too bad that Apple doesn’t allow developers to create plug-ins for Moblie Safari, because this screams plug-in. But, if you’re an image junky, you’ll still love this. It makes pictures that much more fun to look at.
  • Google Earth - The internet nearly exploded when this hit the App Store. It’s the app you’ve come to love on the desktop, now available for your iDevice. Not only can you view two thirds of the world’s land mass, but you can also browse geotagged images and Wikipedia articles with this app. Plus, it uses tilting at low levels to change the view point; super cool. I think you already know whether you need this app.
  • Griffin’s iTalk - There seem to be no end to the audio recording apps on the App Store, but here’s another good one from the folks at Griffin. It’s got a bunch of features, my favorite of which is that it’s free, for a limited time, so jump on this quick! Another great feature is that you can transfer your recordings to your computer by way of another free syncing app, which is available at their website.
  • Fake Call - It’s not that you don’t want to talk to them. It’s more that you’re too busy…right? Whatever, it doesn’t really matter to me the reason you have for wanting to fake a call. Your conscience will catch up with you. But, before it does, grab this one because it’s only free for a few more days.
  • NightTime - Turn your iDevice into a bedside clock. Just place your iDevice into a charger and fire up the app. You get large red digits, and a selectable amount of brightness. The only thing missing is a built-in alarm clock, and maybe a choice of colors. Even still, it looks nice, and it’s free.
  • EasyWriter - Sick of writing e-mails in portrait mode? No one really knows why you can’t just tip over your iPhone and type in landscape, but until Apple fixes this obvious omission, EasyWriter can step in. Not only can you send new e-mail with this app, you can actually reply to others from Mail. It’s a little sneaky. Just open Mail, hit reply, then switch to this app. Compose a new message, and then, when you are done, select “send to mail.” Problem solved. Pretty cool.
