Free Apps roundup for October 2nd, 2009

Free Apps roundup for October 2nd, 2009If there’s one phrase that can summarize the last week on the App Store, it’s probably “yeah, there’s an app for that.”  I know we’ve all heard that one before, but this week brought some pretty unique and useful free apps.

  • Dropbox - everyone’s favorite online file syncing service now has it’s own app!  This has to be one of the best ways to push files to your iPhone.  Much better and easier than email.  And the best part is a 2GB account is absolutely free.  And honestly, that’s the perfect amount of space to be used on an iPhone.  Remember, Dropbox is like a folder that’s accessible anywhere you have access to Dropbox.  And the app actually downloads everything you have synced, so even without a network connection, you still have access to everything previously synced.
  • Zipcar - Zipcar is probably the most technologically advanced car rental agency, and here’s the app to prove it.  You can find, reserve, get directions to, unlock, lock and even honk the horn of a Zipcar with this app.
  • Tunnel Vision (FREE) - what’s better than falling down through an endless maze-like tunnel?  Ok, that’s an absurd question, but this game looks pretty sweet.  The graphics are a very nice.  Dodge your way through some tunnels, or just hit the walls if you prefer dying.
  • Scribd Mobile - This app puts the worl’ds largest social publishing website within the palm of your hand.  This is one of the best sites to find information of many types in book-like form.  Magazines, books, historical data, tutorials, random crap… you’d be surprised what’s on here.
  • Food Network Nighttime - This is the default channel on my TV, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.  It’s not because I love food that much, heck I wouldn’t eat most anything they feature almost ever.  I like it because I love watching the train wreck that is Rachel Ray, and I’m just waiting for Robert Irvin to actually hurt someone.  This app lets you keep up with Food Network by watching clips and even some full episodes.
  • Sphetris - it’s like the sphere form of Tetris.  I imagine this being either loads of fun, or so painfully awful that it’s hard to even think about.  Not sure what you’ll think, but there’s potential here.
  • GoDaddy.com Mobile - that’s right, there’s even an app for the go to domain registrar.  If only it streamed some of their Superbowl commercial too, then they’d have a killer app.  But that’s not to say that registering domains is something that can just wait until I’m back at a computer with an internet connection.  I need my domains NOW!
