Free Apps Roundup for March 6th, 2009

by Jake Gaecke on Mar 6, 2009 at 12:44 PM

This week saw a slow start on the App Store, but we were pleasantly surprised with some of the best free apps to become available in quite some time. I think just about everyone will find a few apps below that are “must haves.”  Enjoy.

  • Tap Tap Revenge 2 - Tap Tap is back, with a vengence? This time there are three game modes and over 150 tracks to play. There are new gestures, like tap and hold and multi-tap. And just like PSN, they add new songs, 2 of them, every Thursday. TTR2, I know you want to tap that.
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Lite - Finally, you, too, can have the chance to kill some Jedi with a lightsabre without properly buying a console or even paying for the full game. This comes with the first full level, and looks to have some pretty stunning graphics.
  • Enigmo Lite - Now, you can give Enigmo a go without paying as well. Try out a few levels before you decide whether it’s pure genius or just not for you.
  • FileAid - Still not half as cool as KoolAid, but hey, what is? This is free until March 17th, so grab it before then. Basically, this lets you store and view files on your iPhone. It works wirelessly like all the rest, and even over USB with a free desktop app. Sweet. Do you want it? OOOOOHHH YEAAAAHHH!
  • Documents Free - Not only can you store documents on your iPhone with this app, you can edit them and sync them to Google Docs. I’m very surprised this doesn’t cost anything. Seriously, this is worth a few bucks to a lot of people.
  • Fenix notes lite - Here’s a sticky notes app that lets you have up to 6 notes at a time. I know, not huge, but the reason I’m recommending it is the following tip. Resize a sticky to be almost full screen, then type your note, and take a screenshot of it by holding the home and power button at the same time. Use this as your background image on your iPhone and you have a pretty note that is always available, and you don’t even have to unlock your iPhone to read it.
  • Eye-Fi - Our favorite wireless memory card maker is at it again with a free iPhone app that does very much the same thing as a standard Eye-Fie card. Only catch is that you need to own an Eye-Fi card to have an account to use this application. Slightly a bummer, but if you’ve got that much, you now have extra functionality for nothing!
  • Kindle for iPhone - Another application that is more worthwhile with it’s hardware counterpart. If you own a Kindle, then this is an awesome app for you when you are away from the device. If you don’t have a Kindle, this is less of a breakthrough, but you can still buy and read tons of books with this app. It’s like iTunes for books, only you can’t just buy or preview a book straight from the app.
