Free Apps Roundup for January 16th, 2009
This week saw a surprising amount of quality 3D games hit the App Store. Plus, Apple loosened up on the internet browsers, though you likely already have Google’s fake Chrome that they snuck in a while ago. Here’s the list.
- Instant Motivator Free - I’m sure you’ve seen some of those motivational posters that some people seem to like to buy and put on their walls as if it really makes a difference. Well, now you can make them from the comfort of your iPhone. Snap a pic, think of a cheesy statement to accompany a big long useless word, specify some options, and you’re on your way to having a poster! But hey, nobody said they had to be motivational. I’m partial to the demotivational posters myself. [Update: The app is currently listed in the store for $999.99. We’re assuming something’s wrong there, but we’re killing the link until that problem’s corrected.]
- Burning Tires 3D Lite - Here’s a 3D off road racer with a style that mixes monster trucks with Mario Kart. There are 12 tracks, 3 locations and 7 cars to unlock in the full version, though this one is obviously more restricted. I still love it when developers provide a try-before-you-buy option.
- Action Bowling Free - Now you can bowl in full 3D using either motion- or touch-based controls. It’s a free version, so you only get to bowl in practice mode, but hey, that’s actually not too shabby. They say it’s the most realistic bowling game on the App Store.
- Toy Tanks 3D Lite - Anyone noticing a pattern here? I swear it didn’t happen on purpose. This is another 3D game in a lite version. It’s an on-rails shooter that claims to be great for casual gamers. I honestly believe casual gaming to be the perfect area to focus on with the iPhone. I just can’t sit down with it for more than a half an hour anyway.
- Edge Browser - Mobile Safari, in full screen. Goodbye toolbars. Probably not a huge breakthrough for the App Store, but now you have choices. I haven’t seen or heard anything about Firefox for iPhone, so I don’t really care that much.
- Wellness - It’s January, and chances are pretty high you’ve resolved to watch more closely what you eat for the first few weeks until you cave, decide it’s not worth it, and become worse than you were before. January isn’t over, so you’ve still got time to keep up the show, and Wellness can help. It has a database of over 7400 foods with nutritional information for all. And it’s all formatted like a traditional food label.

“Instant Motivator Free” is now listed at $999.99. Looks like the developer is trying to catch someone unawares.

on January 16, 2009 at 06:45 PM - LINKFree costing $999.99—Wow!
Anyway, I need something for iPhone and iPod Touch. That’s an app to show the probably central location of any area code. I get call backs for numbers with area codes i don’t recognize, and I don’t call back anyone unless I kind of have an idea who has called, or at least where the call probably came from.
If it’s on an iPhone it should get the entire number, and at least provide the area code location. If on the iPod Touch it should allow me to very simply enter the area code, then giving me the probably location where the call originated.

on January 17, 2009 at 01:08 AM - LINKYou’ve got a couple of options on the area codes thing. You could just go to Google and search for “Area Code ###” which will give you an approximate location, or you could go on the App Store and search for either iAreaCode or iAreaCodePro ($.99 and $2.99 respectively). The Google way is the cheapest, and I think the easiest, but if you don’t have an internet connection, the other two might be good options for you. Hope that helps.
