Free Apps roundup for February 5th, 2010This week is brought to you by iTunes Preview. This means that every time you click one of the links on my list, instead of a useless blank page kicking you to iTunes, you’ll first get a snapshot of the app’s page on the App Store right in your browser. A useful feature for sure. Now you can browse these apps at work. Don’t worry, I won’t tell.

  • Directionary - Homesick?  This app will remind you which direction your favorite places on the planet are (provided you have an iDevice with a compass ie. iPhone 3GS).  It also displays how far away those destinations are in meters, which is about as useful as a distance measured in Cheerios.  I just love the simple design of this app.  Very nice.
  • GetColorsAR - This app allows you to extract color information from the real world!  You could just take a picture and then copy the color by hand, but why!?  Just tap something on the screen of your iPhone and the app will give you a color code to the color you’ve tapped.
  • 3D Brick Breaker Revolution 2 Free - the free version of the sequel to 3D Brick Breaker Revolution, goodness.  Maybe it’s me, but I like the simplicity of a break-breaker style game.  Have at it.
  • Scrabblackbox - I don’t know how they haven’t been shut down by Scrabble yet, but this is essentially a Scrabble dictionary.  I’m not sure why you would want a Scrabble dictionary though because half of the fun of non-electronic Scrabble is using words that aren’t allowed.
  • Video Genius - This is free for a limited time.  If you have an original or 3G iPhone, then this app may help you take “video” with it.  Sure, it won’t be at the frame rate or resolution of the iPhone 3GS or even something that’s good at taking video, but some video is better than none, right?
  • reMail for Gmail - Here’s another freebie that won’t last.  This app’s main feature is that it will download all of your mail from Gmail and make it searchable.  It’s all available offline, though that will take a while to download it all for sure.  Grab it while it’s free just in case.
  • Tweetee - You seriously still don’t have a Twitter app?  And you call yourself a hipster.  Disgraceful.  Anyway, this one is no Tweetie 2, but it might hold you over.
  • Beautiful Planet: Focus on Haiti - Yhis is a set of beautiful photos by Peter Guttman from before the tragic earthquake in Haiti this year.  Remember you can donate $10 to the Red Cross for Haiti relief by texting “Haiti” to 90999.
