Free Apps round-up for December 5, 2008

Free Apps Roundup for December 5, 2008Here are the free apps worth mentioning on the App Store that made their appearance during the past week:

  • CompassApp - Allows you to use your iPhone 3G as a compass. This is one of those “look what my iPhone can do“ kind of apps. It’s slightly impractical, since you have to be moving faster than a walking pace, but the fact that it can work as a real compass is pretty cool. If you don’t have a GPS for your car, this could be somewhat useful.
  • Easy Wi-Fi for AT&T - Make the process of logging into an AT&T hotspot mindless with this app. You have to type in your phone number the first time you launch the app, but from there on out all you have to do is launch the app, and there you are.
  • Voice Dialer - Dial phone numbers with the power of your voice. It’s a little like being God; just speak, and so it shall be. If you say a name, it will return that contact’s details. If you say something more specific, like, “Call so-and-so at home,” it will do as such. So, go ahead and be the god of your phone’s contacts.
  • Dot LITE - For years, I’ve been wanting to make Lite Brite just a little more awesome than it already is. How? The only way I know how…by putting an Apple logo on it. It’s the Lite Brite than runs on your iPhone; just don’t get confused and think that it’s officially from Lite Brite, because it isn’t. Still awesome.
  • Chess O - It’s the first free and open chess game on the App Store. It comes with all the features you’ve come to expect out of a chess game, including multiple difficulty levels, undo, timing options, board customization and even helpful hints. Since there are no ads to be seen, you couldn’t ask for much more in a free chess app.
  • Joost - A favorite desktop app to many, Joost has made its way to the iPhone. You can use it to watch thousands of hours of content, including music, TV shows, movies and more. It can sort by categories, popularity, top picks or search terms. If you’re getting sick of the iPhone’s support for online video (pretty much just YouTube), then it’s time you download Joost.
  • Amazon Mobile - Amazon’s official mobile app for the iPhone. Browse Amazon the way they’d want you to on the iPhone. This is a great tool even if you don’t buy things on Amazon. Amazon.com is a wonderful resource for user generated reviews of products. So, check out a product’s price and reviews on Amazon next time before buying it. Plus they have a great way to remember items that you need to buy, called, what else, Amazon Remembers. Just take a picture of what you need and it’s sent off to the great folks that work at Amazon to find the same or a similar product to recommend to you within five minutes to a day.
  • MotionX Poker Quest Lite - First there was Poker, then Dice, and now it’s Poker Quest. Poker never took me on a quest before this app came along, but that’s okay because the dice in this game are just as real as all of the other MotionX offerings. Plus, this time you get an Egyptian themed game instead of just a dice rolling utility. Sweet!
