Free Apps roundup for August 7th, 2009

Free Apps roundup for August 7th, 2009Thanks to who knows who, this past week has been a bit blah on the App Store. Still, there are a few more icons that can be added to your Home Screen, especially if you have an iPhone 3GS. Check out what the past week or so has brought to you for free below…

  • Ustream 3G S Recorder - Finally, Ustream has released an app to allow iPhone 3GS owners to take and share video content using Ustream. It’s not live, but it’s a step in the right direction, especially if you prefer Ustream to all others.  Videos can be shared with Twitter and Facebook in addition to Ustream.  I personally can’t wait for a live streaming video app, but I’m not holding my breath.
  • Waze - The concept: 100% user generated, live, real time traffic updated maps and directions.  I’m not sure how I feel about that, but it’s free, so you can at least give it a try if free turn by turn directions are something you crave.  And of course, if all of you download this and participate, it will only get better since it’s user generated.  Interesting indeed.
  • mDictionary - If Wikipedia is the source of all truth, then Wiktionary is the definitive source for, well, definitions.  This app finds and formats all those big words you don’t yet know.  They claim you can look up words with this app to win arguments. That seems like a stretch, but hey, dictionaries are awesome, so download it already.
  • Search With Bing - Bing is all the rage these days, so why not find web pages, news, images, answers or so much more with it?  While Bing might be my favorite search engine made by “you know who,” I won’t be using it.  Why?  Bing as a verb is simply not as satisfying as Google.  So don’t expect me to be “Binging” anything when I can be “Googling”  all day long.
  • MyWebComics - Access all of your favorite web comics straight from your iPhone with this handy little app.  Some commonly enjoyed web comics include xkcd, Penny Arcade, Ctrl Alt Del etc.  The developer will be adding more comics and features in future releases.
  • Do Not Press The Red Button - Seriously, don’t press it.
  • Offender Locator Lite - Locate the closest 10 sex offenders to your location.  You can also perform up to 5 searches a day with this Lite version.  That’s potentially 50 different sex offenders!  For your sake, I hope your searches return no one.
