Free Apps roundup for April 9th, 2009Nothing too huge on the App Store this week, but as always, there were quite a few hidden gems. Take a look at what I found; I’m sure you’ll find something useful. This week you’ll be able to expand you vocab, pretend your car is a jet, wrap some string around objects and waste some time with other games. Enjoy.

  • Dictionary.com - Dictionary.com is now available as an application for the iPhone (no Internet connection required). There really isn’t much of a reason to pay for any other dictionary or thesaurus apps when this one provides over 275,000 definitions and 80,000 synonyms. It even does audio pronunciations and similarly spelled words. Do your vocabulary a favor and download this app.
  • Zen Bound Lite - This is probably one of the most unique iPhone games you’re likely to come by. You take a piece of string and wrap it around an object. You’ll have to try this for yourself, because it’s apparently awesome, despite sounding completely ridiculous.
  • V-Cockpit GPS Lite - If you strategically place your iPhone with this app on, you’ll be able to turn anything into a super awesome jet! That’s right, it has jet sounds, a compass and all of those cool gauges! Just remember to check your attitude at the door…
  • Free Night Stand Alarm Clock - What could be better than your iPhone emulating a classic flip clock all night? I’m not sure, but for some reason I get the distinct feeling that having a relatively unchanging image on your iPhone for extremely long periods of time isn’t the best thing you could do for it. But hey, it’s your iPhone, and maybe you just need the time…like right now!
  • Blitz! Football: Less Filling - From the makers of the Arcade Football game comes this less filling edition. You play the quarterback, and you simply throw the ball to an open receiver in hopes of scoring. Wait…since when do we throw the ball in football? Oh yeah, that football.
  • Lights Off (Free) - Apparently this game is a classic, though I have a hard time believing it’s that old. It’s quite obviously inspired by “Lights Out.” Here’s a secret code if you download this game; if you hold down the wake/on button on your iDevice long enough, you can turn the lights out on any game!
