Free Apps roundup for April 24th, 2009

by Jake Gaecke on Apr 24, 2009 at 11:18 AM

Free Apps roundupThis week, the App Store served the 1 billionth app download, and I can’t help but take a little bit of the credit. Nah, I’m just kidding, but it just goes to show you how popular and important the App Store is to the success of the iPhone. It just wouldn’t be the same without the third party apps. As such, here’s this week’s list of free apps and games to keep you a little less bored this weekend. Cheers!

  • De Blob Lite - Paint the town red…or green, or yellow, or whatever.  It’s a wacky puzzler where you have to restore color to the world from which it has been stolen. It’s basically a demo, but at least you’ll get to try your hand at it before spending any money.
  • Convertbot Mini - This is the free baby brother of Convertbot. With it, you can convert between many units of measure. Not sure how often you’ll be doing this, but the next time your friend says he ran a kilo in 7 minutes, you can call him out about how slow that may or may not be.
  • iDaft - Because none of us can get enough of that Daft Punk hand dance stuff.  Please, someone write out the words to Daft Punk’s Hard Better Faster Stronger on your hands and perform the song and hand dance at the same time using this app. Upload it to YouTube, post the link here and become next week’s meme! You don’t even have to thank me, but it would be nice.
  • DoReMi Lite - I’m pretty sure that either Kirk or Bill is going to have a heart attack at the thought of using any musical app that wasn’t from Smule. This is a free Ocarina fingering based musical instrument app that is played by placing your fingers over the virtual sound holes and blowing into the microphone of your iPhone. It’s not a Smule, but it’s free.
  • Move Lite - Ten levels of Move. It’s basically one of those box puzzle games where you have to move the boxes around until who knows what. It’s nice and shiny, though; looks very Nintendo inspired.
  • Wordsearch! Free - Because words! are just too exciting to hold that bang until the end of the sentence. This free version has the standard mode, which generates a random word search puzzle that’s said to be different each and every time. Not too shabby.
