Five iPhone apps for the braniac

by Josh Holat on Dec 4, 2008 at 11:11 PM

iPhone Apps for BraniacsEverybody knows one. The braniac. This is the person who is constantly using complex math formulas and researching scientific data, or is simply way too smart for your comprehension. However, we also know many of you out there would love to consider yourself braniacs, as we do to at times. After all, not just anyone owns an iPhone—you have to be special, like a braniac. Therefore, as an ode to the braniac, nerd, geek, science fan, math lover, or whatever else you want to call it, we have put together a list of five great iPhone apps for you to check out.

  • Graphing Calculator (Free) - We’re not fooling around, and are getting straight to the math with this one. This graphing calculator application from Gabor Nagy is perhaps the best free one available. If support for log, natural log, exponent, sine, cosine, and a spur of other mathematical concepts isn’t enough to make you smile, this application shows your graph in a very clear manner, and even allows you to zoom in and slide around the graph with your finger. Be sure to check this one out to show at your next Math Club meeting.
  • Frenzic ($4.99) - This application from Iconfactory may be one of the most popular puzzle games for the iPhone. Using a sort of pie-like interface and having power-ups as well as numerous levels, the description even says this will “get your neurons firing.” If that isn’t enough to peg the geek meter, then I don’t know what is. Download this application and be on your way to braniac glee!
  • Sudoku (Free) - Although there are at least 20 different Sudoku apps to pick from in the App Store, this one is free and has a great interface. With a game such as this, the user is forced to use his brain a lot as these puzzles won’t just come to you randomly. This is enough to excite any math whiz, if you ask me.
  • Touch Physics ($0.99 on sale) - Knowing how fun it is for braniacs to put their problem solving techniques to the test, this game is perfect. Not only does it incorporate the fun world of physics and all of its laws into the game play, the different scenarios force the user to think through the problem for a solution. Being “incredibly addiction,” according to the description, you can’t go wrong with this app.
  • ChemQuizr ($1.99) - What good is any science nerd without his or her Periodic Table of the Elements? None. For that reason, this application from Wugtest Software is the perfect digital element library to be carrying around with you when you have your iPhone. Like Google Maps, you’d be lost without it.
