For now, all we’re sure of is that YouTube has been in talks with Hollywood studios in attempts to get full catalogues available for rental. The studios appear to be a little reluctant, however, as they fear having movies available on YouTube may harm other promotional methods. YouTube is, of course, known more for short public clips available for free, and has only recently introduced television programs to the site. Whether the public wants full-length feature titles available on YouTube is unknown, with other sources such as Netflix and iTunes already offering big selections.
Also, it is unclear at this point whether feature-length films will be available to watch directly from the native YouTube iPhone application. Having access to movies on the go would be a big bonus, although AT&T may not be too pleased with movies streaming across their data networks.
Hollywood studios stated the prices would be similar to those on iTunes and Netflix, and so for me, at least, sticking with iTunes seems the more obvious solution. iTunes is home to the rest of my media, after all. Still, it’s good to see movies slowly becoming widely accessible, and only time will tell if YouTube film rentals will be a success.
