Announced on Monday the public beta release of FileGuard X4, data protection software for Mac OS X provides “virtual safes” for files you want to keep confidential.

Everyone has sensitive files on their Mac: confidential files for business, personal financial records, private e-mail and more. Unlike Apple’s own FileVault software, which requires you to encrypt an entire home directory, FileGuard X4 lets you choose which files or folders you’d like to protect, . You can create as many safes as you need for different types of files, send files to others, and store files on servers or external disks while still maintaining security.

Safes will increase in size automatically as you add more files, so you don’t need to resize them manually. You can also set read and write permissions for safes stored on shared volumes. FileGuard X4 sports drag and drop support or the ability to create new file safes from the Intego menu.

System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.4 or later and 20MB hard disk space.
