Elgato Turbo.264 Graphics Accelerator reviewed

Elgato Turbo.264

Do you loathe the amount of time it takes to re-encode videos just so it fits onto your video iPod? Elgato’s Turbo.264 Graphics Accelerator aims to cut render time down, and comes in the form of a USB dongle. It comes with a built-in graphics co-processor that handles video conversions to H.264 files optimized for iPod, Apple TV and PSP.

In tests performed by TUAW, the Turbo.264 took approximately 3 hours to rip a copy of Serenity on a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini with 1 GB memory; Handbrake did it in about 5 hours. Unfortunately it won’t directly rip DVDs; you will either have to remove the CSS encryption or convert unencrypted VOB files.

It costs $99.95, and is great for people dealing exclusively with video or those with slower Macs.
