Details on all the new Snow Leopard features
As news of Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard abounds, speculation about features begins. Read on for some more features expected in 10.6, including Multi-Touch support, auto activation, ZFS support, and more.
- More Multi-Touch support. With an update to all Apple MacBooks anticipated to come soon, more Multi-Touch support will be added to Snow Leopard. More commands through the track pad will be added to even more applications throughout the Mac.
- Reduced size for all applications. One anticipated feature of the new OS is a huge size reduction of the base system. No longer will there be UI elements from 10.3 still in the system (Sorry, guys). Estimates show that some of the bigger apps to be slimmed are Mail, which will drop from 287 MB to 91 MB, Preview, which will drop from 70 MB to 11 MB, and Automator, which will drop from 29 MB to 3 MB.
- Addition of more text features. Macs already have the basicsred lines for spelling errors, green for grammarbut more are on the way. The Mac has lacked certain features for word processing that Microsoft Word (whaaa???) already has, including auto-hyphenation and auto replacement (automatically making (c) to go to ©), among others.
- Auto activation. Apps such as Mail already recognize information such as dates, names and addresses, but the service will be extended to automatic activation of items such as fonts needed by any application.
- ZFS Support. Snow Leopard will finally have both ZFS Read and Write capabilities. The current big cat already has a read function, but no write. Now, services that normally require multiple disc drives and servers will be available to the casual user of Mac OS.
Overall, despite reports of a lack of new features in Snow Leopard, it seems as though the new system will in fact be chock full (or, in our case, chock empty) of good additions and removals.

Oh Snow Leopard, you sleek beautiful beast…
on June 23, 2008 at 06:56 PM - LINKYeah, she’s a beauty. My only complaint is the name. I do understand that it is just Leopard with a snowy dusting of speed and security, but I was hoping for something like Lynx or Cougar
on June 23, 2008 at 07:04 PM - LINKIm wondering what pricing will be like for the new operating system, are they really going to charge a full operating system price so we can have ‘less’ of an application XD
on June 24, 2008 at 05:46 PM - LINKI won’t get it if its any more then $65 for a single license
on June 24, 2008 at 06:00 PM - LINKBased on what they are touting for current features, this is probably the most valuable update to Mac OS since the 9 to X transition.
Eye candy is kewl, but computers are tools not toys. If they make it better / faster/ more stable / etc. people will come, and, at least from a corporate perspective, be more than willing to pay for anything that offers massive reductions in support costs, which is 40-60% of IT expense.
It really sounds like they are setting up for a new form factor computer (touch tablet?), with the reduced memory footprint, increased speed, reducing typing needs through auto-correction and auto-recognition of various elements, and touch interface????
