Custom iPhone ringtones can be yours in only 23 steps!

One aspect of the iPhone that has been cause for great speculation is ringtones. Ever since Steve Jobs debuted the iPhone, rumors from iTunes will sell ringtones to you will be able to create your own custom ringtones have been floating around various websites. Even though neither of those rumors have come true as of yet, you can still get custom ringtones on your iPhone with a little know-how and the help of the Terminal.

Hack the iPhone has a 23 step guide on how you can install your very own ringtones. The guide looks pretty easy to follow, but since I myself do not have an iPhone, I’m not able to see how easy the steps actually are. If you aren’t comfortable in the Terminal I would recommend staying away from this installation, as there is a lot of damage that could be done if you don’t know what you are doing. The process also requires you to download 2 additional programs to aid in the installation.

If you have been wondering if Apple will ever allow you to add your own ringtones through their means, it looks like you can now take the initiative and add them yourself. As a sidenote, you must be willing to take the risk of bricking (killing) your iPhone before continuing with the installation, though the site says that no one has done anything to their iPhone that an iTunes restore couldn’t fix.

Has anyone tried this yet? I would be interested to hear some feedback from other readers on how successful they have been.
