Copy and paste comes to jailbroken iPhones

by Alec Feld on Jan 21, 2009 at 09:45 AM

Clippy
Although jailbroken iPhones aren’t as popular as they used to be since the introduction of the App Store by Apple, a resurge in jailbroken apps may occur due to a new application released on the Cydia package manager: Clippy. The app brings probably the most wanted functionality to the iPhone that has been unavailable since its original release: copy and paste.

Although common on many other mobile phones, Apple, for some reason, decided not to include the incredibly useful and needed feature in the iPhone. Thankfully, third party developers have been working on a solution, and came up with Clippy. Yes, your iPhone does need to be jailbroken to use Clippy, but for many, it might just be worth it. Select text, hit the “123” button on the keyboard, and then hit copy. Repeat and hit “paste” to paste the text elsewhere. Users say Clippy isn’t perfect; in fact it has many flaws. It tends to not copy over a line of text, and it will only copy certain text and paste it into certain places. The software is buggy, but this thankfully leaves room for improvement. Try it out and see how you like it. Hopefully, Apple will bring its own copy and paste functionality to the iPhone soon.
