Announced about a month ago, the Boxee Box promises to be one of the best set up boxes on the market once it is released. Getting their start by “hacking” the Apple TV to use their software, the Boxee team quickly made a name for themselves as a great way to access internet media on your TV. This year’s CES has brought more details on the actual specs of the Boxee Box.
For instance, it is able to play Adobe Flash 10.1, H.264 (MKV, MOV), WMV, MPEG, and AVI video formats, as well as plenty of others alongside of a long list of audio formats. However, aside from your own content, this box will also allows users to go onto services such as Pandora, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr.
The Boxee team worked alongside of D-Link to bring the 802.11n Wi-Fi support to the device to make it extremely easy to connect to the internet and save the mess of wires by your TV. The ship date of this device isn’t set yet, but they have promised it will be available at many retail stores in the first half of 2010 at under $200. If you ask me, this offers a lot more than an Apple TV at a lower cost as well as the ability to add more storage. It’s a win-win for Boxee, and I can’t wait to see what happens with the set top box market when this product begins to ship.
In addition, Boxee has announced the device’s remote will contain a full QWERTY keyboard similar to those found on mobile phones. Boxee stated on their blog: “As we began adding features to the Beta it became obvious that for people to really get the most out of the box it was going to need to do more than just point and click. Rather than subject anyone to another on-screen keyboard we decided the Boxee Box should benefit from a full QWERTY keyboard like you might have on a mobile phone.” The images below show the original idea (top) and something closer to what will actually be released (bottom).
