CES 2010: Eye-Fi’s Pro X2 and Eye-Fi Center [updated]

Here’s Eye-Fi’s Pro X2 card in the flesh, er box. They finally got one in on the show floor at CES just in time to win a Best of Show award. And for at least two very good reasons.

The Eye-Fi Pro X2 represents a further refinement of Eye-Fi’s original idea of wireless memory.  Obviously, this is the best yet.  Not only will it wirelessly upload your pictures, it will do it over 802.11 N, if it’s available.  Those pictures (or videos) will find their way to various web services of your choice, and/or your computer.  And what makes this card better than the rest is its “endless memory” feature.  This allows the card to identify pictures that have been successfully uploaded to all intended destinations, and then deletes them.  This effectively turns that 8GB of memory into much, much more.  And it’s a feature that you’ll only be able to get on the Pro X2.

One update current Eye-Fi owners can look forward to is an update to the Eye-Fi software. Actually, they’ve rewritten it as a regular app; it won’t be necessary to connect to the internet for all setting changes anymore, and you won’t have to open a web browser to use it.  It’s called Eye-Fi center.

This should be pushed later in the month to all users.

Update: Just got in some more images of the inner workings of the Eye-Fi Pro X2 card. I just love the amount of technology they squeeze into a standard SD memory card.
