Caught on video: Appletell’s Jake Gaecke destroys Macworld with dental pick

by Kirk Hiner on Jan 9, 2009 at 07:12 PM

DriveSavers
Okay, that’s not entirely true. The dental pick part is, but not the destruction of Macworld. Apple took care of that by its own self, thank you very much. Rather, while watching a demo of how DriveSavers rescues data from damaged hard drives, Jake was selected to be the one to cause the damage. Check out the video to see just how bad your drive actually looks when you hear that clicking sound and find yourself face to screen with that dreaded question mark.

Chris Bross of DriveSavers presented “Dr. Data’s Hard Drive Failure Demonstration” at their booth at Macworld Conference and Expo. The presentation provided a “... cleanroom engineer’s perspective on the inner workings of a hard disk drive ...”

View the video below to see a good disk drive, and a “Jake picked” drive. The damage is actually pretty dramatic when it occurs, and it offers pretty good insight into how hard drives work, and how they’re destroyed.

I also participated in one of these demos earlier in the week. It was a lot of fun.
