How to Stop Psystar Dead in Their Tracks

by Mark Rowland on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:45 AM

end psystar issueWith another new chapter in the Psystar saga, things aren’t all dandy over in Cupertino. The nasty stuff’s about to hit the proverbial fan, so Apple may want to consider their options. But, it looks like Cult of Mac writer Leigh McMullen took care of the thinking, and came up with a seemingly perfect solution.

It’s really rather simple, as it takes care of Psystar’s claims of anti-trust and boosts customer satisfaction levels, all while making a minimal impact on Apple’s coffers. Here it is (drumroll please): Give Mac OS X away.. Yes, you heard right. Free updates for life with the purchase of an Apple Computer. This would help Apple in two ways. The first is that it would give no warrant whatsoever to any anti-trust claims. In order for there to be anti-trust, there is the requirement of having previous “consumer harm.”  And, when you get something for free, you are technically not a consumer. The second benefit would be in the customer base.  People would see this as a way in which Apple is attempting to reduce prices, and that could prove to be a major PR boost.

“What’s the catch?”, you may ask. None, that I can see. Even though there would obviously be a hit to Apple’s revenue, OS X has never been a big revenue center for Apple, and thus, not an issue.

What do you think of this possible solution? Agree or Disagree? Any suggestions of your own? Let your voice be heard in the comments section below.
