AT&T online iPhone shipments on backorder

It looks like I am going to have to wait an extra super long time before I get my Christmas present. I feel like throwing a temper tantrum. This is what makes me mad, AT&T is advertising free overnight shipping on all iPhone orders, but it is kind of hard to fulfill that if you don’t have any iPhones. What the hell? Don’t advertise something if you cannot deliver on it. That is just bad business. So, my first taste of AT&T is quite sour, let’s hope my iPhone ships soon.

As for the network, well, I have a little bit of knowledge on the subject, so let me throw in my two cents. I have read complaint after complaint on the internet about the network being crapy, people getting dropped calls, data being slow, and just about every other network complaint known to man.

Here is the thing, everyone; it’s never going to be perfect. You are going to drop calls when you hand off from one cell site to another. Not all the time, maybe never, but the way RF timeslot allocation works, it can happen. It will happen. Take into consideration the the transmitter in your iPhone (or any phone or that matter) is only .3 watts. Think about this logically for a minute. The cell site is transmitting through the antennas on the top of the cell site at between 15 and 35 watts. Now, it does not take a rocket surgeon to figure out you can be in a position on the edge of service for that cell site where you can hear the person you are talking to, but they cannot hear you. This is not “supposed” to happen. It does.

When you throw “3G” into the mix, it gets even more complicated. You not only have to hand over from site to site, you now have to hand over from network to network. This can cause the same issue that I described earlier, which leads to dropped calls. I know these things can be annoying, but you have to understand all the switches, base site controllers, voice transcoders, and various other equipment that your calls travel through in order to get from you to the destination. Cellular networks are just about the coolest things (other than Apple and Harley Davidson of course) on the planet.

I also bought an iphone online and I agree with you. The way the shipping and handling is advertise as if the phone will be shipped overnight or at least the following day.

The real facts about shipping time and how long it will take can be found in the att policy page.
