AT&T and Apple to be married until 2010?
Remember when the iPhone 3G’s price differential (highly subsidized vs. monthly revenue) compared to the first gen had everyone up in roars of glee? Well, that apparently came with some smart deal making on AT&T’s part. AppleInsider reports that, as part of this deal, AT&T was able to claim their exclusivity on the iPhone until 2010. This is just one year later than the previously thought 2009, making AT&T’s hold on the device a full three years long since the initial release of the iPhone. That sucks.
The reason for AT&T making this sort of deal is obvious. In a world where almost everyone is already devoted to a cell carrier, AT&T has changed their strategy from getting new customers to “stealing” current ones (i.e. forced into a plan). Although this isn’t the greatest for consumers, that’s the way it is for now. AT&T knows they are losing money on the initial purchase, but all the new customers will surely give AT&T their fair due of money from the expensive data plans. What are your thoughts?

how does this relates to marriage?
on August 3, 2008 at 01:52 AM - LINKI hope that there’s a divorce and the iPhone becomes a very active bachelor :), meaning of course that it will be available on several different carriers and as a result monthly rates won’t be a ridiculous $70 per month without text messages.
on August 3, 2008 at 02:49 PM - LINKThis is good news for AT&T, and for their investors, but with the ability to unlock the iPhone becoming easier and easier, Im not sure that will matter much longer.
