Rumor - The Mac Mini and something “huge” to come from Apple this month?
Disappointed by Apple’s Keynote announcements? Me too. We were all expecting something in the way of hardware that wasn’t completely obvious (i.e. the 17” MacBook Pro). Well, we received some potentially good news. While discussing the fate of the expo with a long-time Macintosh software developer, we received a tip from someone in the know about Apple’s coming plans, and it seems that those plans involve a big finger to Macworld.
The tip goes like this. Apple is planning on updating the Mac Mini very soon, and that update won’t be it’s death. In fact, it’s most likely ready as you read this, and could have been announced at Macworld. But instead of announcing it here, Apple held back, seemingly in an effort to prove that they don’t need Macworld. The announcement could come as soon as two weeks. But, as much as I want a new Mac Mini, that’s not the juice in this tip.
Apparently, Apple also has a “huge” announcement that will make the Mac Mini news pale in comparison to the other half of this rumor. Unfortunately, that’s all we know. Our source, who says he heard this directly from Apple reps at this week’s Expo, wouldn’t tell him more than that, but he finds this particularly peculiar. He has had Apple reps slip information to him before, but not this freely. This info, he says, was offered straight off without any questioning, as if it isn’t a secret, but is. He believes Apple is purposely letting this information slip in an effort to further prove the company doesn’t need the Macworld Conference and Expo, and to immediately start generating interest in their own event and to build bigger news than what’s coming from the Moscone Center this week. If this is true, it’s working.
Apple will more than likely be holding a special event shortly for the two big announcements; the first is the Mac Mini, to which Apple expects to you… excuse me… yawn. The second is in true Apple style, completely a secret. But it’s gigantic and will make your mouth drop in a way that doesn’t involve yawning. Stay tuned, things should be heating up shortly.

Oooh, sounds exciting! I really hope it’s a brand new Apple product… like the long-awaited tablet Mac.
on January 8, 2009 at 05:01 PM - LINKI wish they surprised with something totally new, not a tablet or anything like that. Old news.
on January 8, 2009 at 05:12 PM - LINKAny news what Apple is going to do with the rest of ACD line? is there a new 30 or 20 inch coming out, the New Mac Mini look cool wonder can it run a 30 inch?
on January 8, 2009 at 10:09 PM - LINKThis seems to fall in line with what Andy Ihnatko said. He tweeted about some crazy cool new thing Apple was set to release.
on January 9, 2009 at 01:14 AM - LINKI don’t have any reliable info on the future of the Cinema Displays but I can’t see Apple leaving the line the way it is. They’ll have to drop the old models and add at least one bigger and possibly one smaller display to the line up. It just doesn’t make sense for them to keep the old models too much longer.
on January 9, 2009 at 01:18 AM - LINKW00t!!!! New mac mini! I wanted tog et new one… but they didn’t release :( this would be awesome if it’s true!
on January 9, 2009 at 06:15 PM - LINKWhat would you folks consider to be “huge”? What would make you break out your credit card in these tough times?
As much of an Apple fan that I am, there’s little if anything that would make me want to break out the credit card when this mysterious product is announced.
on January 12, 2009 at 01:53 PM - LINKThe new mini will be a cross between the mini and apple tv and they will start to sell movies in itunes worldwide from all the big major companys. Apple thinks this is as revolutionary as the ipod & itunes when that started. If you think they will bring out some new, suoerduper hardware of osmething you never could imagine - think again.
on January 12, 2009 at 04:07 PM - LINKThis was kinda my point… in my admittedly short-sighted mind, there’s little, if anything, they could bring to market that will be “huge”. I have serious doubts this is anything to do with either the Mini or the Apple TV. Both products are rather mediocre. Melding them together doesn’t make it any more interesting.
on January 12, 2009 at 09:11 PM - LINKI was all set to buy my first Apple product, an iMac. I will wait now, probably for six months anyway and hope some iMac update occurs soon.
on January 17, 2009 at 08:38 PM - LINKI’ve been holding off an iMac purchase for a year now ;) Thankfully my MacBook Pro is doing double duty as a desktop replacement. I will probably buy a Mini now instead if the upgrade is somewhat significant.
on January 18, 2009 at 07:58 PM - LINKHmmm maybe it mite be mms for iphone 3g
on January 27, 2009 at 09:19 PM - LINKi wish
It’s been almost a month. Where are these announcements? Are they waiting to get the 17” shipping?
on February 5, 2009 at 05:01 PM - LINKI would really like to see the mini.. I’m hoping it being smaller didn’t sacrifice power and the atom is for the t.v. unit.. I’ve really wanted the mini as a music studio machine running digital performer. In my cramped studio it would save a lot of space and be quiet with low power reqs. My old G5 went down and I do not have 3k to put on a machine and have a good monitor.. fingers crossed indeed!
on February 15, 2009 at 01:13 PM - LINKi keep hearing about these announcments of awesome products but i never hear about the actual event that they could be revealed at. anyone have any info, post it.
if the mini rumors are true, i’m buying definetley
