The idea of Textopolis for iPhone and iPod touch is to use the letters of the city (level) that you are on to spell as many words as you can. There are a total of 30 cities available, and to get to the next city you must get at least 10% of all the possible words. The words must be at least four letters long. Let me say that I spell like a 4th grader, so the fact that you can use plurals is a great help for me. That also means I have not been able to advance to the harder cities in the game, such as Ulyanovsk or Saskatoon.

This game is well designed. As an example, you can start and stop the game as many times as you want, and up to five people can have simultaneous games going at one time. There is no timer, which in my opinion makes the game that much better as you can take as long as you want to think of words. The coolest feature of the game has to be the scrolling definitions that fly across the screen when you correctly spell a word.

Star ratings on the home screen indicate how many words you have gotten correct for that city. The ratings are on a five star scale, with five being 100% complete. I also like the fact that the letters are large and easy for smaller hands to tap correctly. On the word screen, you get some good information, such as “population” (which translates to score) and the number of your words/total words.

The graphic are solid, but a Scrabble-type game does not need to be visually intense in order to work well. Overall, Textropolis is a good game with great re-playability (until you have spelled every word in the game) and a high addiction factor. The only things I can come up with I would like to see added are some kind of statistics screen and maybe a successful word to attempt comparison of some kind.

Ian Marsh has created another pretty decent iPhone game.
