You have an EyeTV Hybrid, and possibly a Turbo.264. Now, what are you going to do with all of this video? You could watch it on your Mac, but I’m sure that couch of yours is calling. How do you do that? Well, you could export all of your video for AppleTV and then buy an overpriced piece of hardware that does one thing…or, you could buy a PS3 and Elgato’s EyeConnect.
EyeConnect makes it super easy to stream video from your Mac to UPnP AV media compatible devices. One of the devices supported you might recognize as the Sony Playstation 3. I might be an Apple fanboy, but the only thing hooked up to my TV besides a Mac Mini is a PS3. Why no Apple TV? Because the PS3 can do pretty much everything an Apple TV can…only more. Like, way more. And with EyeConnect, you can watch all of your EyeTV content on your TV through your PS3. It’s super easy to use, and it works great.
With other similar applications like MediaLink, I experienced problems streaming HD video over the network to the point that I finally just gave up. For some reason, EyeConnect has almost none of these issues. It can actually handle a full HD stream without stuttering every few seconds. If you’ve ever tried to watch a video like this, you’d know it’s impossible.
Now, sadly, I can’t say this program works flawlessly. For some reason, EyeConnect’s sharing has to be turned off and then back on again for the PS3 to recognize it, but it’s a minor price to pay with the level of quality present. What I can say is that when it works, it works amazingly well. And when I say it’s super easy to use, I mean even my parents could do it.
And you’re not just limited to video. You can share music and pictures as well. It’s the definitive bridge between your Mac and living room. If you have a Mac, a PS3 and EyeTV, you might be me. If not, you need to stop watching recordings, viewing pictures or listening to music just on your Mac and pick up EyeConnect so you can experience them from the comfort of your living room.
