mmmJuice software has created an iPhone game that features dirt racing as well as destructible vehicles. The name of the game is All Pro Crash Offroad, but I will shorten it to AP Offroad, as that is what they named it on the iPhone screen. It is currently available in the App Store for a slim $1.99, which I believe to be low for a game of this quality. It is one of the first iPhone games to which I’ve become addicted, which is saying something.
When first launched, you simply choose to start a race. From there, you choose a car and a track to race on, and start racing. It is very simple. When you first begin, you will be able to use two of the four current trucks (their site says they are making more) and start on the first of five tracks. In order to unlock the new tracks, you need to get certain places on previous tracks. For example, getting a gold and a silver on a track may unlock another. Cars may be unlocked with tracks or may require special feats, such as getting the best lap time on a certain track.
Once you actually begin racing, you’ll find the game extremely fun. You have the gas and brake pedals on the right side of the screen as well as the stick shift from drive to reverse. On the left you tap L or R to turn the car. Scattered about the screen are various times, places, and information about the state of your car. One of the coolest parts about this app is that the trucks are destructible. They didn’t include “Crash” in the title for no reason, as crashes are frequent and entertaining. Throughout the course, there are boxes you can collect to repair yourself, but if you loose all of your parts, the race will end. The sound effects of the trucks are realistic, the graphics are outstanding, and the user interface is really good.
As I mentioned earlier, this app is one of the first to which I’ve become addicted. During my time with it, I managed to unlock all five courses, as well as all four trucks (however, I haven’t unlocked the last aspect yet). There were only two issues I had with this application, and they are very minor. For one, the steering is a little hard to get used to. At times, it doesn’t seem to respond, as the L button is very close to the edge of the screen. Second, as seen in the image below, I managed to flip my car over at one point in the game and was stuck. I imagine this is hard to do, but it should be fixed.
In All Pro Crash Off Road, you’ll get creative tracks, a clean user interface, entertaining gameplay, and crashes that rock. The game is really great, and I imagine it will only get better as the developers get feedback from users. With how graphic intensive it is, I was amazed that it never crashed, nor even lagged during my time with it. I highly recommend this as an addition to your iPhone applications.
