Appletell Review: Speck PixelSkin case for the iPhone 3G

by Robert Nelson on Jul 22, 2008 at 04:15 PM

Speck PixelSkin case for the iPhone 3G

Developer: Speck Products
Price: $24.95
Availability: Out now
Pros: Easy to get on and off, soft and comfortable in your hand.
Cons: Lack of any screen protector.
Overall: Good case, but not my personal favorite.

With the iPhone 3G recently released, we are seeing an onslaught of cases coming to market. The decision for a case will be easy for some, as it seems a lot of manufacturers are making the same—if not similar—models as their original iPhone counterparts. But, what are you to do if this is your first iPhone, or if you are looking for something new? With so many from which to choose, this can be difficult.

Speck has quickly introduced a few case models that fit the new iPhone, one of which is the PixelSkin. This case is made from a soft rubber material, and is available in a variety of colors: marshmallow white, licorice black, spearmint green, sherbet pink, huckelberry purple, corncob yellow and blueberry blue. I had the white, black and green case sent to me for review purposes. The black and white are pretty standard colors, and the green was really nice, although it seemed to be slightly darker in real life compared to the image online.

These cases are pretty simple to put on; simply slide the phone in and stretch the skin around the corners. The PixelSkins have openings for the camera lens, headphone jack, and ringer switch, as well as the dock connector and speakers on the bottom. Unlike some other cases, the volume and the power button are covered, but they are still just as easy to hit and adjust as if they were exposed. The headphone jack, in my experience was wide enough to be used with the variety of headphones I have lying around the office.

The front edges of the case are raised a little and offer protection should you place your iPhone down on the table with the display side down, but the PixelSkin does not ship with any screen protector. That is not a big issue, as the display is pretty scratch resistant, but I prefer the extra protection offered by many other cases in this price range which include a protector film for the display. It seems a little strange that it was not included.

Overall, this is a decent case, I like, the soft comfortable grip it offers, but that added some bulk and made it slightly more difficult to put in a front pocket. While it would not be my first choice for a case, I can say that it’s worth the money, and the variety of colors is real nice.

I would never place something as ugly as this on my iPhone… its like making a beautiful model wear a potato sack.

How are u to appreciate the design on the iPhone 3G if this case is strapped to it.

Ipod sock all the way. Simple, stylish and allows me to admire my iPhone everytime i use it!

I just went back to using my Speck Pixelskin after getting SwitchEasy’s CapsuleRebel. Initially I got the Speck to tide me over until I found a more sleek and stylish case.

Surprisingly though when using the CapsuleRebel it felt too slick, and was nowhere near as comfortable to hold whilst walking, and reading whilst eating (ereader). Despite adding some bulk, the silicon is great to stop my iphone sliding around as is the case with an iphone ‘au natural’.

I’ve also switched to this type of case since I scratched the back of my iPhone on my desk last week! I was using one of the leather pouch type cases which was great in my bag but not practical outside of it. I don’t love the look of the skin case but it does what I need it to. If only they looked better!
